Synergetic Play Therapy® Supplemental Course



The Synergetic Play Therapy® Supplemental Course is a self-paced online / independent study course that supplements the information not received during the 2-day SPT training. It involves a review of key points as well as new information aimed at providing you with the missing pieces of the SPT foundational skills puzzle so you can complete the SPT introductory level skills (all combined, this course is equivalent to the 6-month Online Introduction to Synergetic Play Therapy course).

This course includes 9 hours of recorded content that you can access all at once or pace yourself over the 7 months you have access. Plus, you get 6 monthly group consultations with a Synergetic Play Therapy® Consultant to help you integrate what you’re learning (group consultation is a required part of this course and for successful completion). Your SPT Consultant will reach out to you on the day the course starts to schedule your first consultation to occur within the same month.

Synergetic Play Therapy® Supplemental Course Prerequisites:

  • Completion or enrollment in a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) program in counseling, social work, or education
  • A basic understanding of play therapy and play therapy skills
  • Attendance and completion of a recent Lisa Dion two-day training

Please note that this course is only available to anyone who has completed a 2-day training with Lisa Dion within a year timeframe (if it’s been more than a year since you took your 2-day training, contact the Institute to learn how you can still meet the requirement).

What: This online self-paced/independent study course includes 9 hours of recorded content that you can access all at once or pace yourself over the 7 months you have access to the course and 6 consultation sessions with a Synergetic Play Therapy® Consultant to help you integrate what you’re learning. *Please note that group consultation is a required part of this course and for successful completion.

*This course offers supplementation for those who have completed previous SPT 2-day training. Verification of this prior training is required.

*What happens on the start date? – You get access to the course and all it’s content, as well as, your SPT Consultant will reach out to you on the start date to schedule your first group consultation.

Synergetic Play Therapy® Supplemental Course Objectives:

  • Describe the basics of Synergetic Play Therapy® including the tenets, the history, and the main play therapy influences
  • Explain how children use the projective process in play therapy to set the toys and the therapist up to feel how they feel
  • Assess and explain the significance of why authenticity is so important in the playroom
  • Describe how an SPT Therapist accesses (their/his/her) authentic self and deepens the child’s therapeutic process
  • Explain the link between nervous system states and the symptoms that show up in the playroom
  • Describe the importance of regulation in the playroom
  • Demonstrate how the therapist can begin to model regulation to the child so that the child can begin to learn how to regulate
  • Explain what regulation is and isn’t according to Synergetic Play Therapy®
  • Discuss what it means to “overcome a challenge” in the play therapy process
  • Describe what it means to become the external regulator in a session to help a child integrate their challenges
  • Understand a way to conceptualize what is happening in the playroom and the child’s work

  • Explain how to use regulation as a way to help integrate aggressive energy in the playroom
  • Describe how to facilitate the use of sand from a Synergetic Play Therapy® perspective in the playroom
  • Explain how to facilitate the use of art from a Synergetic Play Therapy® perspective in the playroom.

Credits: 15 APT Non-Contact Credits* (15 hours – Suggested APT Category: “Play Therapy Skills & Methods”) *Group consultation may be counted toward RPT requirements. Please speak to your consultant to find out if they are an RPT-Supervisor and how to meet the requirement.
